Not so fast, warns Ahna Brutlag, DVM, MS, a diplomate of the American
Board of Toxicology and assistant director of veterinary services for
Pet Poison Helpline. The ingested substance may be bromethalin, the new
toxin of choice for rodenticide manufacturers. There is no test save
necropsy to detect its presence--and no antidote. </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">
Why are manufacturers switching to bromethalin? Because in 2008 the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a decision prohibiting the
use of second-generation or long-acting anticoagulants in residential
settings. Manufacturers became compliant with these new regulations in
2011, with many using bromethalin instead of anticoagulants in their
products. </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">
Brutlag says the EPA’s changes--designed to make rodenticide safer for
children, pets and wildlife--may actually make diagnosing and treating
rodenticide poisoning more difficult, thereby increasing the risk of
harm. “We feel like it was well-intentioned but we’ve ended up with some
really frightening consequences,” Brutlag says. “With anticoagulants at
least we know there is a very effective test and there’s an antidote.” </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">
Bromethalin is a neurotoxin that affects mitochondria in the brain and
liver. According to the Pet Poison Helpline, it results in decreased ATP
production, which affects sodium and potassium pumps; as a result,
lipid peroxidation occurs, resulting in sodium accumulation within the
cell. Edema of the central nervous system (CNS) may result. </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">
The rapid onset of bromethalin poisoning leaves veterinarians little
time for error. “The symptoms come on faster and it’s harder to treat,”
Brutlag says. With anticoagulant poisoning, veterinarians had three to
five days before bleeding began--maybe a week before death. But with
bromethalin, clinical signs associated with CNS edema may be seen within
two to 24 hours. Once the animal starts showing neurological signs--CNS
stimulation or depression, abnormal behavior, ataxia, hyperesthesia,
seizures, coma--successful treatment becomes more difficult and more
expensive. An animal may have only a couple of days before succumbing.
Even in successful cases, Brutlag says treatment requires more emergency
care and hospitalization. </span></span><br />
<br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5f0_BUYrRCs/VUVaZBS1zTI/AAAAAAAAASU/WnsYzgQ9WTc/s1600/rat-poision-alamy-am4fhk.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5f0_BUYrRCs/VUVaZBS1zTI/AAAAAAAAASU/WnsYzgQ9WTc/s1600/rat-poision-alamy-am4fhk.jpg" height="170" width="200" /></a>
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">“Since there’s no antidote, decontamination is the most important
intervention,” Brutlag says. But she worries that not enough
veterinarians are familiar with how to decontaminate bromethalin
exposure. </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">
According to the Pet Poison Helpline, the median lethal dose (LD50) of
bromethalin for dogs is 2.38-3.65 mg/kg, with a minimum lethal dose of
2.5 mg/kg. Cats are more sensitive, with a significantly lower LD50 of
0.54 mg/kg. Severity is dose-dependent, but if the poisoning is
discovered within 10 to 15 minutes of ingestion, it’s safe to induce
emesis at home, Brutlag says. After that small window, induction of
emesis should take place at a veterinary clinic where the animal can be
monitored for acute onset of CNS signs and be given multiple doses of
activated charcoal--four to six doses over 24 hours. </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">
“Should clinical signs arise, patients are treated with standard
measures to reduce cerebral edema including IV fluids, mannitol, etc.,”
Brutlag wrote in an impact statement for the EPA. Prognosis is poor for
patients exhibiting persistent seizures or paralytic syndrome. </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">
The negative impact on pets from bromethalin poisoning has Brutlag and
others wishing for preregulation standards. In fact, manufacturers of
the rodenticide brand d-Con have refused to comply with the new EPA
standards, continuing to use an anticoagulant as its active ingredient.
“Even though it’s a potent anticoagulant, at least it’s an
anticoagulant,” Brutlag says. The Pet Poison Helpline and d-Con both
cite the dangers of using a toxin with no known antidote as reason for
the EPA to revisit the 2008 regulation standards. </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">
Brutlag concedes that it may be difficult to return to preregulation
standards now that bromethalin products are on the market. For her, the
best solution may be to simply educate pet owners and veterinarians. She
travels the country giving lectures on the dangers of rodenticide
poisonings--most recently at the North American Veterinary Conference in
Orlando, Fla. She says most veterinarians don’t know about the EPA’s
regulations and the change in active ingredients. “They’re shocked and
concerned,” she says. “Being able to inform veterinarians that this
change has occurred is crucial.” </span></span><br />

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lmTMiWbQtSs/VM1YCm4ciQI/AAAAAAAAARc/DLOduJ3pQug/s1600/Runningwithdoginsnow.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lmTMiWbQtSs/VM1YCm4ciQI/AAAAAAAAARc/DLOduJ3pQug/s1600/Runningwithdoginsnow.jpg" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Yes,
it’s cold outside, and the number of daylight hours is short, but your
dog does not hibernate, and it’s important that your dog get daily
exercise. Vital for a dog’s physical and mental wellness, exercise is
also a crucial part of the relationship between Pack Leader—you—and dog.
On those days when bad weather makes walks impractical, you can still
give your pup the exercise she needs with these six ideas for great
winter exercise.</span><br />
<br />
<b><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">1. Play a game with your dog.</span></b><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"> </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Hide-and-seek is a wonderful way to <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">get your dog up</a> and moving and
mentally engaged. You can hide a treat or her favorite toy, but it’s
better to make her come find you. Start by throwing a treat to get her
to go away from you, and then hide in another part of the house. This
game can really tire your pup out as she rushes around searching, and
it’s good for reinforcing the “come” command.</span><br />
<br />
<b><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">2. Challenge your dog’s nose.</span></b><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"> </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Dogs have incredibly powerful scenting abilities, so exercises that
require your pal to use her nose are especially stimulating. Make her
work for her dinner by creating an obstacle course she has to get
through to find her food. Hide her meal in a box, or, better yet, put it
in a <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">Kong Wobbler</a> or a <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">Buster Ball</a>. </span><br />
<br />
<b><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">3. <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">Dog treadmills</a> and indoor walking.</span></b><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"> </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">There are treadmills on the market designed specifically for dogs.
But if you cannot afford one of these, use a human treadmill—but take
the right precautions. Spend a few days familiarizing your dog with how
it works. Use a slow speed and stand in front of the treadmill with a
treat. Over three or four days, slowly increase the speed and the amount
of time your pup spends on the treadmill. Work up to the same amount of
time you normally spend on walks.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"></span><b><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">4. Sign your dog up for a class.</span></b><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"> </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Sign up for an indoor agility or swimming class. Flyball provides
good exercise, and a class comes with the added benefits of allowing
your dog to socialize and boosting her mental agility by learning
something new. Also, many cities have facilities with doggie swimming
pools.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"></span><b><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">5. Practice targeting.</span></b><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Being indoors gives you a great opportunity to practice targeting
with your dog. Teach her to touch her nose to the back of your hand on
command; this will make her focus on a target. It’s a great exercise
because it gives you an activity you can do together. And once your pup
has learned how to do this, you can use it whenever you want her to stop
what she’s doing and focus. For example, if you’re out walking and she
becomes excited when she sees another dog, you can use targeting to
redirect her attention. Plus, your dog can’t bark when she’s touching
her nose to your hand!</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"></span><b><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">6. Don’t be a wimp…get outdoors!</span></b><br />
<b><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"> </span></b><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Most bigger <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">dogs love snow</a>, and they can get a great workout by
plowing through it. Spend 30 to 40 minutes in the snow, and your dog
will get a workout that leaves her exhausted—and her muscles toned. When
you come in, be sure to wash your dog’s paws to clean off any salt. </span><br />
<br />

<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">A <a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">new kitten</a> can be a magical time for the whole family, but a pet is
a big commitment that requires a lot of time, effort and love. The good
news is you'll be repaid tenfold with a lifelong loving companion.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
</span></span><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br /></span></span>
<br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
</span></span><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">With this in mind, there's a lot to think about when you welcome a
new kitten into your home. For starters, there's making sure you choose
the best type of <a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">breed</a> for your family. Then there's <a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">safety</a> - checking that your house is safe for your kitten is an important first step.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
</span></span><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Stepping into a <a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">new family</a>
can be a stressful situation for your kitten as well. New faces, new
animals, and sometimes a new climate can take its toll. That's why it's
important you consider the gradual introduction of your kitten to each
of the elements of its new home.</span></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">Here are a few pointers on welcoming your new family member:</span></span><br />
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">Bring your <a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" shape="rect" target="_blank">kitten home</a> at the start of a weekend. This means you’ll be able to spend more time with your pet and she/ he can meet everybody.</span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">Ask your breeder not to <a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" shape="rect" target="_blank">feed your kitten</a><a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" target="_blank"> </a>before you pick her/ him up. This will prevent kittens feeling car sick on the way to their new home.</span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">Give your pet her/ his first meal after she/ he is settled into her new home. This way, kittens will learn to depend on you.</span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">For the first few days, leave your kitten in a quiet place and slowly introduce her/ him to the other rooms in your house.</span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">Introduce your kitten to as many people as possible. This helps kittens lessen their fear of strangers.</span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">Choose a <a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" shape="rect" target="_blank">name for your kitten</a> and start using it often. Always call her/ him by name when you feed her/ him so she/ he becomes familiar with it.</span></span></li>
</ul>
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">Learning as much as possible about your <a href="http://www.purina.com.au/kittens/new-kitten" shape="rect">new kitten</a> is the best first step to a long and rewarding relationship. </span></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">Koi </a><span data-mce-style="line-height: normal; color: #000000; font-size: 8pt;" style="color: black; line-height: normal;"><a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">fish</a> predators</span><span data-mce-style="line-height: normal; color: #000000; font-size: 8pt;" style="color: black; line-height: normal;"> are everywhere when it comes to <a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">koi ponds</a> but how do you keep and protect your koi fish from predators.
First off some <a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">koi predators</a> are raccoons, snakes, frogs, cats,
kingfishers and the worst predator of all the blue heron. All of these predators pose some <a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">risk to your koi</a> but what can a pond owner do to protect koi from being eaten.</span></span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">The first thing to <a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">protecting your koi from predators</a> is
getting to know the predator themselves. One thing that a raccoon is
afraid of is deep water as they usually fish in rivers from a log or in
shallow water. What a <a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">koi owner</a> can do is when planning your pond at the
beginning is to make sure you leave steep edges that will help stop or
prevent racoons from fishing for your koi and help keep your koi fish safe from predators.</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">The worst koi fish predator</a> of all is the blue heron.
Herons can literally wipe out a whole pond before you even know they
were there. These birds look magnificent but to me it’s my worst
nightmare being a koi breeder myself. I’ve seen these herons try and
come eat my koi on a daily basis multiple times a day. The good thing is
that there are certain things koi pond owners can do to help protect their koi fish from predators.</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">1. Set up pond netting over your garden pond to protect your koi fish.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">2. Place koi castles or tunnels in the pond so they can have a place to hide.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">3. Set up a scarecrow sprinkler system that’s motion activated that scares those nasty little koi fish predators.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">4. Set up fishing line spaced very close together. Once the birds feet hit the fishing line it scares them away.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">5. Install a floating alligator head or hippo in your pond as this will scare pond predators away.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">6. Install koi decoy in pond that will help protect your koi fish and give them a chance.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">7. Install a Garden Defence Electronic Owl that will help deter pond predators from coming and eating your koi fish.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">8. Install a Heron decoy that will help deter herons from stopping by your koi fish pond.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">9. Get a dog! Your pet would one of the best ways to keep wildlife away from your pond. Hopefully he’ll stay out of it too!</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">10. Buy yourself a ultrasonic sound device that sends noise only
wildlife can hear. This will keep pond predators away too. Animal
Away is a great animal control product that works well. </span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></span>

<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TotEm8ugxJo/U1Lk3SkskuI/AAAAAAAAAQM/wLfOYwGzwPM/s1600/IMG_0734.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TotEm8ugxJo/U1Lk3SkskuI/AAAAAAAAAQM/wLfOYwGzwPM/s1600/IMG_0734.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Most people think of <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">Chickens</a> as backyard roamers, or maybe the next
item on the dinner plate. But there is another way to own Chickens, and
that way is raising them to be your companion. Many people find this
hard to believe, but <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">Chickens can be just as loyal as Dogs</a>. They will
sit in your lap, come when they hear their name, and even cuddle with
you for hours straight. The story of my first <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">Chickens</a> began in
September 2009. I never expected to have loved them as much as I do to
this day, but things turned out to be what I never knew possible. Okay,
so you're wondering why I haven't started explaining how to do it,
right? That's because I wanted to tell you how mine turned out, and
then, you'll have a look at how <em>you </em>can raise your <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">Chickens</a> to be some of the cuddliest in the world.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
</span><div id="yui_3_10_0_1_1397941315974_254">
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 14px;">1. Let's say your
Chick is a few days old. Of course it is very small and hasn't been
handled much, so the first thing to do is to gently pick it up by hand.
Make sure not to startle it. Place it on your lap, right below your
shirt, and cover it with your hand. Rub its head and let it fall asleep
in your shirt. Be sure not to do this when your Chick is newly hatched
because it will need heat to dry up its down feathers in order to fluff
up after being wet from the Egg. Continue to do this cycle on the first
few days of caring for your Chick.</span></span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 14px;">2. After a week or
two, your Chick should develop some feathers. It should be lively and
active enough for some playtime. You can pat your knees and call it by
its name for it to come to you. My chick always ran happily to me and
tried to jump into my lap.</span></span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 14px;">3. At the age 4-5
weeks old, you can introduce your Chick to the outdoors. Make sure to
provide a safe environment for your bird. Don't let it free until you
trust it to know good from bad, and make sure there are no cats or dogs
nearby that could harm it. Pick it up from the ground and sit somewhere
safe where you and your bird can cuddle while it still gets the fresh
air from being outside.</span></span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 14px;">4. At the age 6-7
weeks old, your bird can stay outside if it is used to it. You should
visit it daily with treats and Yogurt for good behavior. Sit it on your
lap for a morning cuddle. Remember that at this stage of life, your
Chick should be able to jump up to you perfectly well. Practice tricks
to build the ultimate relationship with your bird.</span></span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 14px;">5. At weeks 8+, your
Chick should be used to its every day life. By this time, you can expect
your Chick to love you more than anything else in the world. Morning
cuddles, coming to its name, tricks and Treats- There is so much more to
list. You'll be pleasantly surprised with your results. I actually put
Chickens on the top of my 'Favorite Animals' list because I experienced
something that, like I said, I never knew was possible.</span></span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 14px;">Then by the time your
Chicken is 21+ weeks old, depending on maturity, it may get into
mating. Expect your eggs around 25 weeks old. But that's a totally
different story. Broody Hens, crowing Roosters- That won't matter that
much when you live the life you are given with hand-raised, loving
Chicks.</span></span></span><br />
<div id="yui_3_10_0_1_1397941315974_255">
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 14px;">That's the way to raising your Chicks to become wonderful, loving, lap pets that you will always have by your side.</span></span></span></div>

<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span class="story_dl">LOS ANGELES, Nov. 15 (UPI) -- </span>European
hunter-gatherers domesticated <a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">wolves</a> more than 18,000 years ago, with
evolution turning them into today's <a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">dogs</a> as <a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">household pets</a>, U.S.
scientists say.</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">DNA studies by researchers at UCLA showed <a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">domestic dogs</a> were genetically grouped with ancient <a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">wolves</a> or <a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">dogs</a> from Europe,
not with <a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">wolves</a> found anywhere else in the world or even with modern
European <a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">wolves</a>, the university reported Friday.</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">"We found that
instead of recent <a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">wolves</a> being closest to <a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">domestic dogs</a>, ancient
European <a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">wolves</a> were directly related to them," evolutionary biologist
Robert Wayne said. "This brings the genetic record into agreement with
the archaeological record. Europe is where the oldest <a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">dogs</a> are found."</span></span><br />
<div style="background-color: white; border: medium none; color: black; overflow: hidden; text-align: left; text-decoration: none;">
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></span><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">The researchers studied 10 ancient <a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">"wolf-like" animals</a> and eight <a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">"dog-like" animals</a>, mostly from Europe. All more than 1,000 years old,
most were thousands of years old, and two were more than 30,000 years
old. <a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">Dogs</a>, they concluded, evolved from ancient <a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">wolves</a> that inhabited Europe and are now extinct.</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">The
domestication of predatory <a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">wolves</a> likely occurred among ancient
hunter-gatherer groups rather than as part of humans' development of
sedentary, agricultural-based communities, the researchers said.</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">"The
<a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" target="_blank"> wolf</a> is the first domesticated species and the only large carnivore
humans ever domesticated," Wayne said. "Other wild species were
domesticated in association with the development of agriculture and then
needed to exist in close proximity to humans. This would be a difficult
position for a large, aggressive predator. </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">"But if domestication
occurred in association with hunter-gatherers, one can imagine <a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">wolves</a>
first taking advantage of the carcasses that humans left behind -- a
natural role for any large carnivore -- and then over time moving more
closely into the human niche through a co-evolutionary process."</span></span><br />

<i><a href="http://www.vetstreet.com/dr-marty-becker/5-surprising-cat-facts"></a></i>My love of knowledge has been a guide in my life and has taken me far
from the Idaho dairy farm on which I grew up. It’s one of the reasons
why travel has always been so important to me — I’ve been to more than
80 countries, and my wife and I have taken our children to many as well.
<br />
Even when I’m not in motion, I like to keep learning. And it should
come as no surprise that much of what interests me has to do with pets.
While the human-animal bond has always been of special interest to me,
the fact is that the quirkier bits of trivia appeal to the perpetual
student in me — particularly when it comes to cats.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><b><br /></b></i></div>
<i><b>The Element of Surprise</b></i><br />
I love to surprise others, and I hope I catch you saying “I didn’t know that!” with these five crazy cat facts.<br />
<b>A cat’s tongue is magic.</b> Well, not really. But it sure seems that way if you watch<a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank"> </a><a href="http://www.blogger.com/null" target="_blank">a slow-motion movie of a cat drinking water</a><a href="http://www.blogger.com/null" target="_blank">.</a> A
cat’s tongue breaks the surface of the water and returns to the mouth
too quickly for the human eye to follow well, dragging a column of water
up with it. The cat’s mouth then captures the water before gravity
pulls it down. We know this because an engineer at the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology used one of the University’s specialized cameras
to record the motion at 120 frames per second, then analyzed the
result. The result was <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">published in the prestigious journal <i>Science</i></a><i> </i>in November 2010. MIT professor Roman Stocker told <i>Wired</i> magazine that this discovery could have implications when it comes to the design of robots.<br />
<br />
<b>Cats have more bones in a key part of their spine than people do.</b> Cats
have a combined 20 thoracic and lumbar vertebrae, compared with 17 in
people. The number of bones in the mid-spine region accounts in part for
the power and flexibility cats have when it comes to fast acceleration
and leaping ability. Cats are capable of attaining speeds of more than
30 mph for very short distances — just a few yards — which is a perfect
skill if you’re a stalk-and-pounce predator. And cats can jump several
times their height, flying over fences to the disgust of many a
cat-chasing dog. Their other anatomical oddity is a free-floating
collarbone, which can enable a cat to fit through an opening the size of
its whisker span. That is, unless <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">he’s fat</a>, which too many cats are these days.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><b><br /></b></i></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b>Some calico cats are male. </b>Yes,
I still hear people saying that all <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">calico cats</a> are female, along with
tortoiseshell and related “dilute” versions (gray instead of black fur,
and shades of yellow instead of bright orangey-red). If you were to make
a bet that a calico is female, you would probably win, but there’s no
guarantee: Approximately one calico in 3,000 is male, thanks to a
genetic oddity known as “<a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">Klinefelter syndrome</a>,” in which an animal has X
and Y chromosomes, making it a male, but also has an extra X chromosome
(which allows for the expression of the calico coat pattern). By the
way, betting that an orange tabby is male isn’t as good a bet, for reasons I have previously explained.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<b>Cat sex isn’t fun.</b> That’s because the feline penis
is barbed, with about 100 painful points that scrape the inside of the
vagina during the mating process. That’s why female cats yowl in pain
when they’re bred and why male cats are often smacked by the claws of
their angry mate — she’s lashing out. Biologists believe the scraping in
part works to remove the sperm of other males, but mostly what the pain
does is stimulate the female to release a hormone that starts to ripen
the eggs in her ovaries. The procedure is the same for lions and
domestic cats — and every feline in between. It certainly tells you how
powerful the mating urge must be for cats to reproduce despite a
procedure that doesn’t seem particularly satisfying.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><b><br /></b></i></div>
<a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank"><b>Kittens are born with blue eyes.</b></a> In this, <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">cats are like people.</a> That’s because melanin, the substance that determines eye
color, isn’t in full play at birth. The more you have of it, the darker
your eyes, but that’s only part of the story. When babies open their
eyes, the melanin in the irises starts to express itself, thanks to
exposure to ultraviolet light. (When an animal is an albino, there is no
melanin in the irises, which appear pink because of the blood vessels
in the eye.) Cats have an astonishing range of eye color, from China
blue to brown, with amber, green and hazel in between. Some cats have
eyes of two different colors, and a few even have irises of two
different colors. But they all start out with baby blues.<br />

Temperatures reaching the middle to upper 90’s in
July should convince anyone of that. Here are several management
factors that should be carefully considered when managing horses in
hot, summer weather.<br />
Plenty of water should be offered to the horse. The average 1000
pound horse will drink around 10 gallons of water a day. Working
horses, particularly in the heat, can easily increase this to 20 or
more gallons a day. Water and electrolytes are both lost when a horse
sweats, leading to potential problems with dehydration and other
metabolic conditions if they’re not replaced. Make sure the horse has
access to clean, fresh water and salt at all times. Be cautious
adding flavorings to water. While it may encourage some horses to
drink, some of the products contain salt which may cause the horse to
stop drinking if too much is added.<br />
Exercise during the hot hours of the day should be limited.
Exercise generates body heat which must be released to prevent
overheating. This can be difficult during summer months. The Heat
Stress Index, or “Misery Index”, can help people to know when to be
cautious about working with horses during hot weather. If the combined
temperature and humidity are over 150, care should be taken to ensure
the horse does not become heat stressed. If the humidity is over 75%,
sweating as a cooling mechanism becomes compromised. The sweat doesn’t
evaporate off the horse; it runs off them, which is much less
efficient. Sweat losses in a working horse can increase from 20-300%
in extreme conditions. If the horse must be worked during the heat of
the day (perhaps you’re at a show or competition), then care should be
taken to ensure the horse has adequate shade and ventilation (fans or
misters) to help them stay cool. Between classes, stand them in front
of a fan in the shade or sponge them off and scrape the excess water
from them to help cool them down. Again, water and salt should be
offered frequently.<br />
Overweight horses will have a harder time dealing with the heat.
The added body fat acts as insulation, trapping body heat and making it
more difficult for the horse to cool off. Working an overweight horse
in the heat is an excellent way to end up with a sick animal.<br />
Feeding management is also affected by the temperature. Some horses
will go off feed if they get too hot. This can be a problem if the
horse is too thin or is losing weight due to the heat – they can’t gain
if they don’t eat. Also, the digestion of feed results in the
generation of body heat, and some feeds generate more heat than
others. Adding fat to the diet will increase the calories in the feed
without increasing the volume of feed and fat burns cooler in the body
than protein or carbohydrates. Feed only as much protein as the horse
needs in order to reduce the heat load. Also, feeding grass forages
will decrease the metabolic heat generated as compared to feeding
legume forage.<br />
Barns should be opened as much as possible to allow any breezes to
keep the stable ventilated. If necessary, add fans at strategic
locations to pull air through the barn.<br />
Cooler weather will return, never fear! In the meantime, keep plenty
of water and salt in front of the horses, don’t exercise them during
the heat of the day, and feed them appropriately for their needs.Barleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07611866427917127091noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5073232503095142186.post-65702406288589000222013-03-31T19:36:00.001-07:002013-03-31T19:37:08.419-07:00Rabbits as Easter Gifts<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
Thinking of bringing home a live bunny as an Easter gift this April?</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Did you know that…
</div>
…Pet rabbits can live from seven to ten or more years and require the same long-term care as dogs and cats?
<br />
…Young children and bunnies aren’t such a good match?
<br />
…Pet rabbits aren’t low-maintenance pets―they have specific dietary and veterinary needs, and must be handled with care?
<br />
…Pet rabbits must be live indoors, with their human families?
<br />
…Thousands of ex-Easter bunnies are abandoned to shelters or into the wild each year when their novelty wears off?
<br />
If your family's set on getting a rabbit, start by giving a
chocolate bunny or a stuffed toy for Easter and, if your young children
are really serious about it, a book on rabbit care. If they're still
begging you for a bun after the holiday has passed, go to your local
shelter or rescue group and find out how to adopt the rabbit (or even
better, a bonded pair) of your dreams. For info on bunny care and rescue
groups, head to the <a href="http://www.rabbit.org/" target="_blank">House Rabbit Society</a>.
<br />
You can also help spread the word that rabbits are not disposable
pets by getting involved in the Make Mine Chocolate! campaign. Started
in 2002 by the Columbus House Rabbit Society, the campaign aims to
educate the public about the challenges of owning a rabbit and
encourages parents to give chocolate or toy bunnies as Easter gifts
instead of live rabbits. Check out the group's website, <a href="http://makeminechocolate.org/" target="_blank">MakeMineChocolate.org</a>, for more info.<br />

season is definitely changing and I am sure our pets know it. The
horses and dogs coats are thickening, the cats are staying closer to
home and the chickens are going to bed earlier and sleeping in! Whether
the holiday has come or gone, leaving your pet in the winter can be
stressful. At BarleysList.org you can always find the best pet sitters.
And share your experience with others too with our review and 1-5 star
rating system. Google, Yahoo and AOL only offer businesses which have
web sites. <span class="Object" id="OBJ_PREFIX_DWT333"><a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">BarleysList.org</a></span> offers businesses which could not be found otherwise. Take
your pet with you. Did you know there are hotels which offer horse

large or small. Almost every <span class="Object" id="OBJ_PREFIX_DWT335"><a href="http://www.jdoqocy.com/click-3412230-10418431" target="_blank">Best Western</a></span> offers pet friendly accommodations. <br />
Whether your pet is large or small, they need extra protection during the colder months. Preventive Measures Can Save Pets</h2>
The holidays are a festive time for us and <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">our pets</a>. However, due to
ongoing activities and constant distractions, we can easily overlook
potential dangers to our four-legged family members.<br />
Take preventive measures to <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">protect your pets</a> this holiday season.
Being aware of these top five dangers could save you a trip to the
veterinary emergency room.<br />
<h3>
1. Holiday Tinsel and Ornaments</h3>
Tinsel, while not toxic, is very attractive to pets, particularly
cats. The shiny, dangling decoration reflects light and can move in the
slightest draft — appearing to come alive to watchful critters.<br />
<br />
The problem with tinsel is that once it’s consumed, it can cause
serious injury to your pet. If not caught in time, this foreign body
ingestion could actually be fatal as it twists and bunches inside your
pet’s intestines. Immediate veterinary care is required.<br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fQUE0EVlYt4/UM-NQobJX3I/AAAAAAAAANo/qRHYIyM0iTw/s1600/christmasornamentsandlab.ashx.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fQUE0EVlYt4/UM-NQobJX3I/AAAAAAAAANo/qRHYIyM0iTw/s320/christmasornamentsandlab.ashx.jpg" width="320" /></a>In addition, bright and colorful tree ornaments can attract your
pet’s curiosity. Place glass, aluminum and paper ornaments higher up on
the tree. <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">Pets can chew</a> and swallow these fragile objects and not only
can broken pieces form sharp edges that may lacerate your pet’s mouth,
throat and intestines, they could also create a choking hazard.<br />
<h3>
2. Holiday Lighting and Candles</h3>
Twinkling, shiny and dangling holiday lights — such as the icicle,
netting, garland, curtain, rope and candle varietal — may be another
source of danger to your curious pets.<br />
<a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">Got a pet that likes to chew</a>? Electrical shock may occur when a pet
chomps down on an electrical cord, causing tongue lacerations and
possible death. Check your holiday lights for signs of fraying or
chewing and use a grounded three-prong extension cord as a safety
precaution.<br />
If you have candles on display, place them in a hard-to-reach spot so
that your pets can not access them. Not only can pets seriously burn
themselves, but knocking over candles creates a fire hazard and may
leave a trail of hot wax that will easily burn the pads of paws and
more.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2-C7sLqgdAI/UM-N_gdla1I/AAAAAAAAANw/plYsqo0WFOo/s1600/christmastreecat.ashx.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2-C7sLqgdAI/UM-N_gdla1I/AAAAAAAAANw/plYsqo0WFOo/s320/christmastreecat.ashx.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<h3>
3. Gift Wrap Ribbon </h3>
You may be tempted to fashion your pet with a decorative ribbon “collar” but beware that this could become a choking hazard.<br />
Also, it’s best to quickly discard ribbons and bows wrapped around
holiday gifts so that your curious companions won’t be enticed to chew
or swallow them. Ingested ribbon can cause a choking hazard and
ultimately twist throughout the intestines, leading to emergency surgery
and even death.<br />
<h3>
4. Food Hazards</h3>
Festive events often mean edible treats — and lots of them.
Unfortunately, some of the most popular holiday goodies, such as
chocolate, bones and nuts, can be extremely toxic or fatal to pets.<br />
<ul>
<li>Different types of <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank"><b>chocolate</b></a>
contain various levels of fat, caffeine and the substances
methylxanthines. In general, the darker and richer the chocolate (i.e.,
baker’s chocolate), the higher the risk of toxicity. Depending on the
type and amount of chocolate ingested, dogs might experience vomiting,
diarrhea, urination, hyperactivity, heart arrhythmias, tremors and
seizures. </li>
<li><a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank"><b>Fat trimmings and bones</b></a>
are dangerous for dogs. Fat trimmed from meat, both cooked and
uncooked, may cause pancreatitis. And, although it seems natural to give
a dog a bone, a dog can choke on it. Bones can also splinter and cause
an obstruction or lacerations of your dog's digestive system. </li>
<li>Abundant in many cookies and candies, <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank"><b>certain nuts</b></a>
should not be given to pets. Almonds, non-moldy walnuts and pistachios
can cause an upset stomach or an obstruction of your dog's throat and/or
intestinal tract. Macadamia nuts and moldy walnuts can be toxic,
causing seizures or neurological signs. Lethargy, vomiting and loss of
muscle control are among the effects of nut ingestion. </li>
</ul>
Keep your pet on her regular diet and caution visitors against giving
your pet special treats or table scraps. <br />
<h3>
5. <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">Toxic Holiday Plants</a></h3>
They may be pretty, but some holiday plants are poisonous—even
deadly. As little as a single leaf from any lily variety is lethal to
cats. Others to avoid:<br />
<ul>
<li>Christmas tree <b>pine needles</b> can produce oral irritation, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, trembling and posterior weakness. </li>
<li><b>Holly</b>, commonly found during the Christmas season, can cause intense vomiting, diarrhea and depression. </li>
<li><b>Mistletoe</b>, another Christmas plant, can cause
significant vomiting and diarrhea, difficulty breathing, collapse,
erratic behavior, hallucinations and death when ingested. </li>
<li><b>Poinsettias</b> can cause irritation to the mouth and stomach and sometimes vomiting. </li>
</ul>
Taking precautions with pets during these festive times can help
ensure that you and your family will enjoy a happy — and healthy —
holiday season!<br />

<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OPNHGmDxzqg/UJU93Xw6H8I/AAAAAAAAANI/wh30eoD79M8/s1600/images.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OPNHGmDxzqg/UJU93Xw6H8I/AAAAAAAAANI/wh30eoD79M8/s1600/images.jpg" /></a></div>
<b>- Companionship -</b><br />
<a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">Goats</a> are herd animals. They generally do not do well alone. "An
only goat is a lonely goat" A lonely <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">goat</a> will let you know it, and no
one will be happy. They need other <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">goats</a>, or at least other <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank"> livestock</a>
such as <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">sheep</a>, <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">pigs</a> or <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">horses</a>. When keeping <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">goats</a> with <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">horses</a> there are
some important considerations, such as the ability of the goat to
compete for food.<br />
We recommend that you consider having a minimum of three <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">goats</a>. This
allows for an interesting mix and keeps things dynamic. Also, with
three goats, if one <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">goat</a> dies you will not be left with just one <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">goat</a>
while you locate a new companion.<br />
<br />
<b>- Protection -</b><br />
<a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">Goats</a> are vulnerable, particularly to attack by dogs. Dog-proof fencing is essential. (see Fencing, below). If your <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">goats</a> do get out and are running away from you, do not
chase them. Run the other way and they will follow you! Much has been
said of the cleverness of <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">goats</a>, and they will find a way to escape from
time to time. Keep a container of grain (e.g. COB) handy. If the goats
get out, rather than trying to herd them, Just run and get your grain
can and start off in the direction you want to go while shaking it
loudly. The <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">goat</a> (or the whole herd) will follow you anywhere.<br />
It's a good practice to call out to the herd whenever you are offering
food or treats. If I want the herd to come back to the barn for food, I
call out "goat, goat, goat" and they all come running.<br />
<br />
<b>- Shelter -</b><br />
<a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">Goats</a> need shelter from rain and wind. They need a dry place to bed
down. A three-sided shelter is sufficient, as long as the open side is
on the lee, away from the wind. <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">Goats</a> are bossy, and a dominant goat
might take over a particular part of the shelter. In that case it is
best to provide a variety of shelters, sufficient for the individuals in
your herd. We have found that large dog houses, or "Dogloos" are very
good goat houses, plus they are fun for the goats to play on. If you
live where it rains for long periods, consider that the goats won't want
to be stuck inside a small shelter. Then they need a nice big roofed
area where they can move around and still stay dry. When designing your
shelter, it's best to offer two ways in and out. Smaller <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">goats</a> will
generally avoid a space they can get trapped in by a bigger <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">goat</a>, and
bigger <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">goats</a> will prefer the larger spaces.<br />
<br />
<b>- Bedding - </b><br />
In cold weather, a bed of straw or left-over hay is very good.
We feed our <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">goats</a> both from mangers and directly on the floor of the
barn, and let the left-over heay build up on the ground. This hay,
combined with their own poop, composts and creates heat, such that if
you were to dig down just a few inches with your hand you would find it
to be quite warm. When the goats bed down on this surface, they enjoy
the heat. The warmth from the floor heats their stomachs and actually
helps them digest their food.<br />
For that reason, we suggest that a clean, bare floor is not really the
best thing for goats. Even though it seems hygienic, in a cold climate a
bare floor deprives the goats of the benefits of warmth.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_oBKEGp6dsI/UJU996pgMDI/AAAAAAAAANQ/t74maeVt798/s1600/images2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_oBKEGp6dsI/UJU996pgMDI/AAAAAAAAANQ/t74maeVt798/s1600/images2.jpg" /></a></div>
<b>- Fencing -</b><br />
Four-foot fencing is generally sufficient to keep goats in.
Young <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">goats</a> may jump over a fence that high, and we have had "climbers"
who will climb a four foot fence, but that is very unusual. Often these
climbers are pygmy goats. Full-sized goats are just too heavy to get
that high off the ground.<br />
Several kinds of suitable fencing are suitable. We prefer "no climb"
fencing, which consists of 2" wide by 4" high mesh. "Sheep" or "Field"
fencing is OK too, but not quite as strong or impenetrable. Also, young
goats with horns may put their heads through the larger mesh and get
their horns caught. Recently we have been using a good compromise
between field fencing and the more expensive no-climb, consisting of a
uniform mesh of about 3" square, and designed specifically for <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">goats</a>.
All fencing should be woven, not welded, since goats will butt and rub
against it, and break the welds. Be sure that your gate latches are not
too simple or too accessible. <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">Goats</a> are very clever and will quickly
learn to open them.<br />
If you are concerned about dogs getting into your fenced area (and
generally you should be), consider running a length of electric fencing
around the outside of the fence, near the bottom.<br />
Electric fencing is inexpensive and easy to install, and can be
useful under certain circumstances. For example, you might use it to
fence off an additional area of pasture that the goats might not
otherwise have access to. However, <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">goats</a> can get through it, electricity
can fail, and dogs and other predators might choose to jump it or
ignore it, so you should only use it when you are around, and you should
bring the goats in to sturdy wire fenced enclosures at night. In my
experiments with electric fencing, I found four-strand tape or cord
fencing to be much more effective than three-strands. The white tape or
cord is more visible to the goats and easier to work with.<br />
<a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">Goats</a> will girdle and kill some mature trees. To prevent this, wrap the tree trunk several times around with chicken wire.<br />
Do not stake out your goat or put them on a tether. Not only is this
illegal in many areas, it can be very dangerous for the goat. A staked
out goat is prey to dogs. It can easily turn over its water and wrap
its tether around any obstructions. Also, a staked out goat is alone,
and goats don't like to be alone.<br />
<br />
<b>- Nutrition -</b><br />
<a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">Goats</a> are a lot like deer in their eating habits. They can live on a
steady diet of good alfalfa, but that is probably a little too rich.
They will be healthier and happier on a varied diet that includes of
shrubs, leaves, tree bark, etc. We feed our goats mostly local grass
hay. Even if there is plenty of brush, they will still need a little
alfalfa or oat hay as a supplement, particularly in the winter.<br />
They need a salt/mineral block too. There are mineral blocks made
especially for goats. These contain copper -- which goats need, but
which is harmful to sheep. If your soil lacks selenium then it is
important to provided it. It is best to provide the salt and minerals in
granular form, as this encourages them to take as much as they want.<br />
They need a source of fresh water at all times. Chopped apples,
carrots and a handful of grain makes a great goat treat. A few plants
are poisonous to goats. If you are not sure, don't feed it to the goats.
Be especially careful about trimmings you get from neighbors because
you might not know what is in them.<br />
<br />
<b>- Recreation -</b><br />
<a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">Goats</a> love to climb and to stand on top of things. They like it if
you introduce new things from time to time, or at least move things
around. They love to go for walks, and do not need to be leashed, as
they will follow you. However, do not take them where there might be
dogs.<br />
<br />
<b>- Maintenance -</b><br />
<b>Hooves:</b> <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">Goats</a> need their hooves trimmed
approximately every three or four months. In general, goats with dark
hooves seem to need less frequent trimming than those with light-colored
hooves. It's easy to tell when they need trimming, because the horn
will start to splay out in the front or wrap under along the sides. You
can learn to trim the hooves yourself, using a sharp pair of pruning
shears or specially designed trimming sheers. My favorite sheers were
designed for sheep's hooves. During the winter, if the ground is wet,
their hooves tend to de-laminate on the sides. If this happens be sure
to trim as high up as necessary to eliminate any pockets that might get
packed and infected. If you do this, then the hoof will grow back out
during the summer.<br />
<br />
<b><a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">Vaccinations</a>:</b> Except for worming, we do not
maintain a course of vaccinations. This type of treatment is probably
more suited to commercial settings. We give our goats Ivermectin shots
worms. This medicine is available at feed stores if you want to do it
yourselves, or through a veterinarian.<br />
We keep some injection vitamin B and antibiotics handy for those situations that seem to indicate it.<br />
<br />
<b>- Horns and Disbudding -</b><br />
Almost all <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">goats</a> are born with heads that will produce horns. The
horns begin to develop (bud) within the first few weeks of birth. We do
not disbud our goats, but plenty of the <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">goats</a> we rescue have already
had their horns removed. Any herd of <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">goats</a> has a hierarchy, and the
horned goats are almost certain to be dominant over any goats in the
herd that do not have horns. That's usually not a problem.<br />
We do not recommend removing the horns of <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">pet goats</a>, although we do
recognize that there are situations and circumstances where people
might find this to be their choice. Certainly if it means the difference
between your taking a baby goat or not, it is better to satisfy your
concerns and disbud than to not take the <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">goat</a>. Usually, though, you
don't have a choice, because if disbudding is done it should only be
done when the goats are very young. Very soon, the sinus passages grow
up into the horns, (sooner for males; sooner for some breeds such as
alpines, than for other breeds, such as nubians) and there is a risk of
infection. Once the horns are about an inch long, the sinus cavity has
probably already reached the horns.<br />

<div class="content-fragment-content">
The lot of a <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">reptile</a> captured or bred for the pet-store trade is
grim. The trip from the breeder or dealer is typically cramped and
unsanitary, and many <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">reptiles</a> do not survive it. Those who do will
probably have health problems that don't show up until months later.
Unfortunately, reptiles are perceived as requiring minimal care rather
than specialized care, so they're big business—nearly 4 million U.S.
households owned a <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">reptile</a> in 2000. <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">Pet-store</a> employees are rarely
trained to effectively tend to the sensitive needs of <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">reptiles</a> and
therefore cannot educate prospective <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">reptile</a> caretakers.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank"><b>Snakes</b></a><br />
Depending on the variety, snakes can live for decades and grow to
lengths in excess of 5 feet. They require at least a 30-gallon tank,
frequent checkups, and care by a veterinarian who specializes in
reptiles. Fresh water and a spotless environment must be provided at all
times. Most are carnivorous. They are susceptible to a variety of
parasites as well as blister disease, respiratory and digestive
disorders, and mouth rot. Strictly controlled daytime and nighttime
temperatures and the careful application of pesticides are required in
order to guard against mite infestations.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank"><b>Iguanas</b></a><br />
Green <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">iguanas</a> are some of the most frequently abandoned companion
animals, likely because people find out too late what is required to
care for them. A properly cared-for iguana can live for more than 20
years and grow to be more than 6 feet long. The enclosure for a
full-grown iguana should be at least 18 feet long, humidified, and
maintained at a particular temperature with specific timetables for
darkness and ultraviolet light. Common problems for captive iguanas are
metabolic bone disease from calcium deficiency, mouth rot, respiratory
disease, abscesses, and ulcers. Wild iguanas do not suffer from any of
these illnesses. They're also strict vegans, limited to a very specific
range of greens and fruits. Costs for food, an enclosure, lighting, and
vet bills can total hundreds of dollars per year. It takes about a year
of daily interaction to socialize an iguana, and even then, sexually
mature males will be very aggressive six months out of the year if they
see their own reflections or if confronted with other iguanas.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank"><b>Geckos</b></a><br />
People who would never take on the commitment of a 6-foot <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">iguana</a>
might be interested in geckos. Sadly, these are very popular reptiles in
pet stores. These small, frail-looking lizards can often live up to 30
years and require a very particular environment without the slightest
variance in temperature. They feed on insects and baby mice. Although
wild geckos are found throughout temperate and tropical regions of the
world, most of the ones offered for sale are captive-bred.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank"><b>Turtles</b></a><b> </b><br />
In contrast, most of the North American species of turtles available
in pet stores have been taken from their natural habitats. All other
species are probably captive bred—most likely in Louisiana,
which has nearly 60 "farms" that exported 11 million turtles in 2000.
Most states have laws either banning or restricting the sale of turtles,
so it is likely that any you see at a pet store have suffered illegal
capture or were raised in less-than-humane conditions. Since parasites,
bacteria, and fungi prey on weak or stressed turtles, the health of a
store-bought turtle is questionable. Just like any other reptile, a
turtle's needs are very specific: thermostatically controlled
temperatures, enough water to swim in, a large housing area, and a
varied diet. The average lifespan of an aquatic turtle is 25 years,
while a land tortoise could outlive you.<br />
<br />
<b>Caution</b><br />
There is a health risk associated with owning any <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">reptile</a>. Seventy thousand people in the U.S.
contract salmonellosis from direct or indirect contact with reptiles
and amphibians every year. Children, pregnant women, and people with
compromised immune systems are particularly at risk of serious illness
or death. If you or anyone close to you is in one of these categories,
rethink bringing a reptile into your home—even healthy-looking animals
may be carrying the disease. Many <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">reptiles</a> are brought into the country
with little or no inspection or quarantine.<br />
<br />
<b>Adoption</b><br />
Welcoming a <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">reptile</a> into your home means a commitment of time, space,
and money. You'll need to provide the right temperature and humidity
and specific light/dark cycles that may not coincide with your own or be
convenient to you. Backup power is necessary to keep a constant
temperature in the event of a power failure. It is a harsh fact that
most reptiles are carnivores—do you really want your freezer full of
dead animals? In all, costs for food, an enclosure, lighting, and vet
bills can total hundreds of dollars per year.<br />
<br />
Purchasing a <a href="http://barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">reptile</a> caught in his or her natural habitat encourages
the removal of wildlife from delicate ecosystems. Buying captive-bred
animals only encourages breeders to replenish their stock. If you must
have a reptile as a companion animal, please consider adopting one from a
local shelter or rescue group.<br />

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-EVSwXVDP35U/UBl15aVWqpI/AAAAAAAAAMo/QnkHZaLEljQ/s1600/cat_evolution_tree1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="250" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-EVSwXVDP35U/UBl15aVWqpI/AAAAAAAAAMo/QnkHZaLEljQ/s400/cat_evolution_tree1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
The friendly, little <a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">feline </a>sitting on your lap has a long and predatory
ancestry. Its family tree is unusually complicated and only recently
has been deciphered.<br />
<br />
It appears that all <a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">modern cats</a> developed about
10.8 million years ago in Southeast Asia. These were not the first <a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">cats</a>. Nimravids, similar to a saber-tooth, date back 35 million years
ago, but there descendants went extinct long ago.<br />
<br />
Today there
are 37 species of Felidae from the <a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">tiger </a>to the tabby that form 8
lineages. A distinctive feature of all <a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">cats </a>are their highly developed
predatory skills-fast, dexterous and with five weapons (four clawed paws
and a mouthful of fangs), evolution has created few predators more
perfect for the task. Yet, all <a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">cats </a>in the wild are currently threatened
with extinction.<br />
<br />
The ancestor of today's <a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">cats </a>was a
panther-like creature that split into the <a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">big cat</a> families of today,
Panthera. Panthera includes the following species: lions, leopards,
jaguars, tigers, snow leopards, clouded leopards and Bornean clouded
leopards. Wherever these <a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">cats </a>live, they are the dominant predator. All
of them roar, except for the two clouded leopards.<br />
<br />
A little over
nine million years ago, the bay cat lineage formed. Small to medium in
size, the Bay cats, Asian golden cat, Bornean bay cat, Marbled cat, are
limited to forested areas in Southeast Asia.<br />
<br />
The next split came
8.5 million years ago with the caracals. The caracal, African golden
cat and serval are all native to Africa. They have distinctive long legs
and large ears.<br />
<br />
During the time that <a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">cats </a>were developing
distinctive lineages in Africa, they were also traveling to North
America. About eight million years ago, the ocelot family formed. The
ocelots, Geoffroy's cat, kodkod, tigrina, Andean mountain cat, pampas
cat, margay and ocelot reside in Central and South America. The ocelots
have 36 chromosomes, all other cats have 38.<br />
<br />
A little over seven
million years ago, the lynx ancestor formed in North America. Besides
their short tails, unique among <a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">cats</a>, they lynxes have shown a tendency
for wide dispersal. They live in all the northern temperate climates of
Europe (Iberian lynx), North Asia (Eurasian lynx) and North America
(Bobcat and Canada lynx).<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">Cats </a>in general are adept at spreading
to new areas. As they reach maturity, males move on to new territories.
This has allowed cats to spread from Asia to Africa and from Asia to
North America and then South America. Amazingly, this migratory tendency
has then allowed new species to develop in the Americas and migrate all
the way back to Africa.<br />
<br />
This evolutionary surprise is found in
the Puma lineage that formed 6.7 million years ago and split into the
Puma (North and South America), jaguarondi (South America) and cheetah
(Africa). Usually the large cats of Africa are thought of as closely
related--lion, leopard, tiger and cheetah. However, the cheetah's
closest living relative is the puma of the America's. The American
cheetah went extinct in North America long ago.<br />
The ancestors of
the leopard cat also came from America and formed about six million
years ago. The Asian leopard cat, fishing cat, flat-headed cat,
rusty-spotted cat and Palla's cat would become the dominant <a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">feline</a>
lineage in Asia.<br />
<br />
Finally, over three million years ago, the cat
we are most familiar with, the domestic cat and its close relatives, the
wildcat, sand cat, black-footed cat and jungle cat, began their
lineage.<br />
<br />
Somewhere between Israel and the Near East, about
8-10,000 years ago, the cat was domesticated from the wildcat, creating
its own specie. While nearly all the other cat specie's face survival
threats in the world today, the domestic cat flourishes at about 600
million.<br />
<br />
Sometimes, it is hard to imagine that the purring,
happy cat rubbing against our leg has an ancestry as one of the top
mammal predators of all time. Only when a mouse or even a toy catches
its attention do we glimpse a predatory instinct as basic in the tiger
as the <a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">domestic cat</a>.<br />

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gMBS2irw9CU/T_cJwAsf9aI/AAAAAAAAAMc/ruLfycu5cfg/s1600/a-urine-burns-88.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gMBS2irw9CU/T_cJwAsf9aI/AAAAAAAAAMc/ruLfycu5cfg/s320/a-urine-burns-88.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">Grass burns</a> from dog urine are a source of frustration for dog owners
who take pride in a beautiful lawn. Brown or yellow spots of dead grass
are unsightly, but some dog owners feel that it's just part of living
with dogs. In fact, there are <a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">ways to prevent grass burns from dog urine</a>.<br />
<br />
While <a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">nitrogen</a>
is an essential component in healthy soil, high concentrations of it
can cause grass to turn yellow or brown. Urine is naturally high in
nitrogen and alone can cause grass burns. However, lawn fertilizer also
contains nitrogen. An excess of either or a combination of urine and
fertilizer may result in an overdose of nitrogen, thus "burning" the
grass. Salts and other compounds in dog urine may also contribute to
grass burn. In addition, highly acidic or alkaline urine may alter pH of
the soil in that area of your yard, adversely affecting the grass
there. <br />
It may seem like female dog urine causes more trouble to the lawn
than male dog urine. This is simply because most females tend to squat
and urinate in one place, while many males lift the leg and "mark"
upright objects in multiple locations. The composition of a dog's urine
does not vary that much between male and female dogs, especially when
spayed or neutered.
<br />
There are a few ways to prevent brown or yellow spots on your
lawn caused by dog urine. You can try more than one option at a time for
maximum results. There is no guaranteed way to end urine spots in the
yard, but the following methods might help stop grass burns caused by
dog urine:
<br />
<ol>
<li><a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">Train your dog to urinate in one area</a> and plant a urine-resistant ground covering in that area. One great option for this is clover. You might also try creating a <a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">dog-friendly landscape</a> in your entire yard.
</li>
<li>Give your dog a supplement or food additive that is designed to
neutralize the nitrogen in the urine. One example of this type of
product is <a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">Naturvet Grass Saver</a> (compare prices).
As always, ask your vet before starting any supplement. Additionally,
never attempt to alter your dog's urine pH unless specifically
recommended by your vet.
</li>
<li>Immediately after your dog urinates, use a garden hose to rinse
off the area. You might also consider switching to a low-nitrogen
fertilizer for your lawn (make sure it's pet-safe too).
</li>
</ol>
Remember that other animals might have access to your yard and their
urine can cause lawn damage as well. A fence will keep out any dogs
passing by, but cats and various wild animals are not so easy to stop.
This may or may not explained continued brown or yellow spots in the
yard after implementing the above recommendations.<br />

<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-TyaxsohRRB8/T8qU8wEwmLI/AAAAAAAAAMI/o6N41CInfwc/s1600/407849668_864d4c5820_m.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-TyaxsohRRB8/T8qU8wEwmLI/AAAAAAAAAMI/o6N41CInfwc/s1600/407849668_864d4c5820_m.jpg" /></a></div>
<b>Taxonomy</b><br />
While sheep and goats have many similarities, their
taxonomy (scientific clasification) eventually diverges. Each is a
distinct species and genus. Sheep (<i>Ovis
Aries</i>) have 54 chromosomes, while goats (<i>Capra Hircus</i>)
have 60. While sheep and goats will occasionally mate, fertile sheep-goat hybrids are rare. Hybrids made in
the laboratory are called chimeras.<br />
<br />
<br />
<b>Look at their tails<br />
</b>The easist way to tell the difference between a sheep and
goat is to look at their tails. A goat's tail goes up (unless
it is sick, frightened, or in distress). Sheep tails hang down
and are often docked (shortened) for health and sanitary reasons.<br />
<br />
<b>Foraging behavior<br />
</b>The biggest difference between sheep and goats is their foraging
behavior and diet selection. Goats are natural browsers, preferring
to eat leaves, twigs, vines, and shrubs. They are very agile and
will stand on their hind legs to reach vegetation. Goats like to eat the tops of plants. Sheep are grazers,
preferring to eat short, tender grasses and clover. Their dietary
preference is forbs and they like to graze close to the soil surface. Goats require a more nutritious diet.<br />
<br />
<b>Behavior<br />
</b>Sheep and goats tend to behavior differently. Goats are naturally curious and independent, while sheep tend to
be more distant and aloof. Sheep have a stronger flocking instinct
and become very agitated if they are separated from the rest of
the flock. It is easier to keep sheep inside a fence than goats.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-163RBR2NjMk/T8qVDMPzndI/AAAAAAAAAMQ/uSnufm3cvxs/s1600/2454731081_b028a9c552_m.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-163RBR2NjMk/T8qVDMPzndI/AAAAAAAAAMQ/uSnufm3cvxs/s1600/2454731081_b028a9c552_m.jpg" /></a>Goats will seek shelter more readilty than sheep. Neither likes
to get their feet wet and both prefer upland grazing to lowland.
In a fight, a ram will back up and charge to butt heads. A goat
will rear up on his hind legs and come down forceably to butt
heads. This fighting behavior favors the ram.<br />
<br />
<b>Physical differences</b><br />
Sheep and goats have many physical differences. Most goats
have hair coats that do not require shearing or combing. Most
sheep grow wool coats that need to be sheared at least annually. Lamb tails are
usually docked (shortened) whereas goat tails are not.<br />
<br />
Sheep have an upper lip that is divided by a distinct philtrum
(groove). The goat does not.<br />
Male goats have glands beneath their tail. Sheep have
face or
tear glands beneath their eyes and foot or scent
glands between
the toes. Male goats develop a distinct odor as they
grow in sextual maturity. The odor is very strong during the rut (mating
season). Sexually mature rams have much less of an odor, if they have
an odor at all.<br />
<br />
<b>Horns<br />
</b>Most goats naturally have horns. Some goats have beards. Many
breeds of sheep are naturally hornless (polled). Some sheep have
manes. Goat horns are more narrow, upright, and less curved than
sheep horns. Sheep tend to curl their horns in loops on the sides
of their heads.<b></b><br />

<span style="color: black;">Ever
wonder where you could find reliable pet care? A good dog walker? How
about an online pet store which actually has what your looking for? You
can find all of this and more at <span class="Object" id="OBJ_PREFIX_DWT1098"><a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">BarleysList.org</a></span>.
Find what others are saying about the services you want, then you can
share your experience with others too with our review and 1-5 star
rating system. Google, Yahoo and AOL only offer businesses which have
web sites. <span class="Object" id="OBJ_PREFIX_DWT1099"><a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">BarleysList.org</a></span> offers businesses which could not be found otherwise. What makes <span class="Object" id="OBJ_PREFIX_DWT1100"><a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">BarleysList.org</a></span> so unique is that pet lovers can offer their feedback regarding the services that they have used. <span style="color: black;"></span><br />
<span style="color: black;">Take
your pet with you. Did you know there are hotels which offer horse

Whether your pet is large or small, they need extra care during the

Great Britain formed the <a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">Riding for the Disabled</a> (RDA) program initially to promote competition and equine sports for the disabled. Germany and Switzerland have been in the forefront of developing and establishing Hippotherapy as a medical model of equine-assisted therapy. <a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">The North American Riding for the Handicapped Association</a> (NARHA) in the United States puts forward a model that incorporates therapy, education, sport, and recreation/leisure activities.</p> <p> </p> <ul><li> At some centers, the emphasis is on learning riding skills and using these skills for recreational or sport purposes. These would include trail riding, driving, vaulting and competition. </li></ul> <p> </p> <ul><li> <a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HtU4yq8pf0M/T3ClzMQsGOI/AAAAAAAAAL0/-hFfmFXx1rw/s1600/SophieTheEnd.jpg"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 236px; height: 242px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HtU4yq8pf0M/T3ClzMQsGOI/AAAAAAAAAL0/-hFfmFXx1rw/s320/SophieTheEnd.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5724257425271036130" border="0" /></a>An emphasis on education and/or psycho/social development usually includes educational, behavioral, social, and emotional growth. Specific goals in these areas are incorporated in the standard riding lesson. </li></ul> <p> </p> <ul><li> The therapeutic/medical model integrates principles of medical and/or psychological development into various uses of the horse. In this case, the use of medical practitioners such as physical therapists, occupational therapists, psychologists, speech therapists and others become an important part of the program. A specialized form of therapy called Hippotherapy is sometimes employed by physical, occupational and speech therapists who are trained in this area. </li></ul> <p> </p> <ul><li> Many centers use an integrated approach, involving all three of the above approaches. Most centers, as well, use a team approach to <a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">therapeutic riding</a>. There are the obvious differences in color & form, and also the environmental and scientific differences. But, from the practical standpoint of <a href="http://barleyslist.org/">fishkeeping</a>, the differences are not as many as a lot of people think.<br /><br />The basics for keeping <a href="http://barleyslist.org/">freshwater fish</a> also apply to <a href="http://barleyslist.org/">saltwater fish</a> (keep the environment stable with adequate filtration, monthly partial water changes and temperature control.) The only major difference is that with a marine <a href="http://barleyslist.org/">aquarium</a> you must add salt to the water (by mixing a dry salt blend) and the cost of the <a href="http://barleyslist.org/">fish</a> themselves is much greater in most cases. Of course a varied diet is important for both freshwater and <a href="http://barleyslist.org/">saltwater fish</a>. One other difference is that most <a href="http://barleyslist.org/">saltwater fish</a> are wild caught specimens whereas most <a href="http://barleyslist.org/">freshwater fish</a> are either tank or pond raised. The transition into a captive environment from the wild can sometimes be difficult, hence the theory that <a href="http://barleyslist.org/">saltwater fish</a> are more "delicate than freshwater". Most <a href="http://barleyslist.org/">aquarium</a> problems occur in the newly set up <a href="http://barleyslist.org/">aquarium</a>, by people who don’t understand the basic principles of biological filtration. In their enthusiasm they start up the <a href="http://barleyslist.org/">aquarium</a> with too many <a href="http://barleyslist.org/">fish</a> and/or the wrong kinds of fish, then overfeed them and conclude that marine <a href="http://barleyslist.org/">fishkeeping</a> is too difficult. This is why you hear stories about people spending a whole lot of money on <a href="http://barleyslist.org/">saltwater fish</a> and giving up within 6 months or so because their fish kept dying. Be patient, start with 1 hearty <a href="http://barleyslist.org/">fish</a> per 10 gallon of water (<a href="http://barleyslist.org/">damsels</a> or <a href="http://barleyslist.org/"> clownfishes</a> are good choices), feed them lightly and give the aquarium 3-8 weeks to cycle and in most cases you will succeed.<p>Whether you choose <a href="http://barleyslist.org/">Freshwater or Saltwater fish</a>, READ and LEARN as much as you can and you will enjoy the hobby so much more because you will have minimal losses and your tank(s) and fish will look so much better!</p><span style="font-size:100%;"><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/"><strong>Pet Friendly Businesses</strong></a><span style="font-family:arial;">- To edit and/or update your information follow the link to that page: </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">http://www.barleyslist.org/</a><span style="font-family:arial;"> and Select Add/ Edit your business. </span></span><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);font-size:100%;" ><span style="font-family:arial;">If you're looking for </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">pet supplies</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://barleyslist.org/">pet stores</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">pet friendly hotels</a><span style="font-family:arial;"> or </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">dog friendly restaurants</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">specialty veterinarians</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">animal rescue</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">pet adoption</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">pet sitters</a><span style="font-family:arial;"> and </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">pet sitting</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">pet services</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">pet friendly services</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">dog parks</a><span style="font-family:arial;"> and </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">cat friendly bed and breakfast inns</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, etc- for all types of </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">pets,</a><span style="font-family:arial;"> </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">birds</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">fish</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">dogs</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">cats</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">horses</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">reptiles</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">rabbits</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">sheep</a><span style="font-family:arial;"> and </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">goat</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">farm animals</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">small pets</a><span style="font-family:arial;"> and </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">pocket pets</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, etc- visit our site. Today <a href="http://BarlaysList.org">cats </a>have become one of the <a href="http://BarlaysList.org">world's most popular pets</a> perfectly suited to the lifestyle of our day. They are beautiful, enigmatic and easy-to-care for pets. But where and when did the domestic cat originate? This page will give you some insight into this question.</span><span style="font-family:arial, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size:100%;"><span style="font-family: arial;"> </span><p style="font-family: arial;" align="left">It has been about 4000 years since the first <a href="http://BarlaysList.org">cats </a>were domesticated. The Ancient Egyptians were the first to keep and use <a href="http://BarlaysList.org">cats </a>to control vermin and other pests to protect stores of food. In Ancient Egypt, the cat was revered as a hunter and worshiped as gods and goddesses. The ancient Egyptians imposed the death penalty for killing cats and cats were also mummified before being buried.</p><span style="font-family: arial;"> </span><p style="font-family: arial;" align="left">Other ancient civilizations later began to <a href="http://BarlaysList.org">domesticate the cat</a> and took tame <a href="http://BarlaysList.org">felines </a>to Italy where they slowly spread around Europe. Eventually, they arrived in the New World with the Pilgrims. The short-haired <a href="http://BarlaysList.org">domestic cat</a> spread across the world from Egypt while long-haired cats came later from Turkey and Iran. The <a href="http://BarlaysList.org">domestic cat</a> also spread from India to China and Japan.</p><span style="font-family: arial;"> </span><p style="font-family: arial;" align="left">Except for a short period of persecution in the Middle Ages when cats were associated with the devil, by the eighteenth century cats had become popular household pets world wide. </p><span style="font-family: arial;"> </span><p align="left"><span style="font-family: arial;">The <a href="http://BarlaysList.org">wild cats</a> of today such as Lions and Tigers descended from early carnivores called miacids. I wasn't afriad of our first grade class' Rosy boa and I had two fire-bellied <a href="http://www.BarleysList.org">toads</a> at home named Yzerman and Federov.</p><p> When I started dating my partner, Funk, I was elated to learn he had six — <strong>six!!!!</strong> — <a href="http://www.BarleysList.org">snakes</a>, and I earned awesome points for wanting to hold them. We've since downsized to three snakes and added three <a href="http://www.BarleysList.org">bearded dragons</a>. We are, officially, a <a href="http://www.BarleysList.org">reptile</a> family. And it's rad.</p><p>There's a lot to love about our <a href="http://www.BarleysList.org">cold-blooded pets</a>, starting at the beginning. After initial set up, reptiles are low-maintenance. Sure, they need heat lamps and the right environment in their cages or tanks, but once all that’s set up, <a href="http://www.BarleysList.org">reptiles</a> get fed every two weeks and need watering once in awhile. Other than that, the critters need to be handled occasionally — or all the time! — and sometimes need a little help shedding. </p><p>It's a nice benefit that <a href="http://www.BarleysList.org">reptile</a> tanks become instant décor — or even furniture! We have a gorgeous box tank that Funk’s grandpa built and Funk has turned an old bookshelf into a <a href="http://www.BarleysList.org">snake cage</a>. The pieces look beautiful in our living room and the pets’ habitats have become part of our home décor.</p><p> Just like any other pet, our herps teach our kid responsibility. He’s definitely going to be helping out with the <a href="http://www.BarleysList.org">bearded dragons</a>. We bought them when we were pregnant and have called them our son's dragons since before he was born. As soon as he’s able, he’ll be helping clean their cages and feeding them meal worms. Plus, how rad will that be to have his friends who come over might not have seen a reptile before?</p><p><a href="http://www.BarleysList.org">Reptiles get a bad rap</a> with the whole <em>cold</em>-blooded thing, but <a href="http://www.BarleysList.org">reptiles</a> can cuddle, too! Have you ever had a <a href="http://www.BarleysList.org">snake</a> wrap around your arms or curl up in your lap and just rest in the warmth of your body? It’s not a death grip; the snake is smart and knows it can’t eat you. <a href="http://www.BarleysList.org">Bearded dragons</a>, meanwhile, love chilling on your shoulder or chest. You’re sharing your body heat with a <a href="http://www.BarleysList.org">cold-blooded creature</a>.</p> <p><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4L93NnXY_gE/TtzxbZRVETI/AAAAAAAAAKg/YaEg3rhS0co/s1600/Jadzia-300x199.jpg"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 199px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4L93NnXY_gE/TtzxbZRVETI/AAAAAAAAAKg/YaEg3rhS0co/s320/Jadzia-300x199.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5682682282777055538" border="0" /></a>It's important to note there are different options for feeding. I know many people freak about feeding the snakes live mice, but there are options. If you don’t mind the mice but aren’t cool with feeding them live, frozen pinkies are available for your snakes! Also, there are water-dwelling <a href="http://www.BarleysList.org">snakes</a> which eat fish, if that's easier for you. And don’t forget about the other <a href="http://www.BarleysList.org">reptiles</a> out there — most turtles and tortoises are vegetarians, <a href="http://www.BarleysList.org">bearded dragons</a> eat meal worms and crickets, and <a href="http://www.BarleysList.org">iguanas</a> eat everything from lettuce to corn.</p> <p>While I'm definitely against the exploitation of <a href="http://www.BarleysList.org">exotic animals</a>, they are pretty awesome as moving, living art. Our green tree python looks like a mix between a dragon and the <a href="http://www.BarleysList.org">snake</a>, Kaa, from The Jungle Book. She is gorgeous.</p><p>It's my hope that the more people that own <a href="http://www.BarleysList.org">snakes</a> and other herps, the more education gets spread about them. They aren't "bad" animals. Snakes do bite. They strike when they’re hungry and they think food is in front of them. Sometimes the heat signal from a hand reaching in their cage, especially when they’re hungry, can be mistaken for a warm mouse squirming around. But dogs bite, too; cats scratch; birds nip. All animals come with “what if” situations. Because of cultural mythology and a lot of hype, <a href="http://www.BarleysList.org">reptiles</a> get a bad name. Like with any animal, it’s all about safe handling and good pet ownership practice. Our herp kids have become part of the family and overall experience of our home.</p> <p>And no, none of our snakes are going to eat our son.</p><p><strong>About Rachael Jordan</strong></p> <p>Rachael is a Master's student and alternative mama who loves her apartment-living on a college campus, tries to read everyday, and is constantly trying to figure out how to make a rental more Robot family friendly.</p><p style=" color: rgb(0, 0, 0);font-family:arial;"><span style="font-size:100%;"><a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/"><strong>Pet Friendly Businesses</strong></a>- To edit and/or update your information follow the link to that page: <a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">http://www.barleyslist.org/</a> and Select Add/ Edit your business. </span></p><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);font-size:100%;" ><span style="font-family:arial;">If you're looking for </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">pet supplies</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://barleyslist.org/">pet stores</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">pet friendly hotels</a><span style="font-family:arial;"> or </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">dog friendly restaurants</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">specialty veterinarians</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">animal rescue</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">pet adoption</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">pet sitters</a><span style="font-family:arial;"> and </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">pet sitting</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">pet services</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">pet friendly services</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">dog parks</a><span style="font-family:arial;"> and </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">cat friendly bed and breakfast inns</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, etc- for all types of </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">pets,</a><span style="font-family:arial;"> </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">birds</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">fish</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">dogs</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">cats</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">horses</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">reptiles</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">rabbits</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">sheep</a><span style="font-family:arial;"> and </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">goat</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">farm animals</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">small pets</a><span style="font-family:arial;"> and </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">pocket pets</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, etc- visit our site. That's why Peanut and Jelly, a pair of 10-year-old <a href="http://BarleysList.org">mixed-breed dogs</a>, were sporting the latest in cold-weather <a href="http://BarleysList.org">canine couture</a>.</p><p>"I think they're very cute," said owner Eric Amel. "I like seeing the dogs in their coats, so I don't think they look silly. I think they look very cute."</p><p>Cute, no doubt. But are all those pet parkas, sweaters and vests you've been seeing around the <a href="http://BarleysList.org">dog park</a> during this cold snap really needed?</p><p>"For the most part, it's not necessary," said Matthew Cooper, an <a href="http://BarleysList.org">emergency veterinarian</a> at New York Veterinary Specialists, a 24-hour emergency vet clinic in Manhattan. When it comes to enduring long walks in the cold, Cooper says, "I don't think the dogs mind it half as much as we do."</p><p>Some <a href="http://BarleysList.org">veterinarians</a> take it even further, saying heavy coats can be dangerous for dogs. If they're getting a lot of exercise, it could lead to heat stroke. Plus, <a href="http://BarleysList.org">dogs don't catch colds</a>, and low temperatures don't give them the sniffles. The truth is, many dogs don't mind the frigid temperature one bit.</p><p>For example, <a href="http://BarleysList.org">Iditarod dogs</a> mush through more than 1,000 miles of Alaska snow every year in below zero temperatures.</p><p>"Certain dogs are built for this," Cooper said. "Certain breeds enjoy this. I mean, this is kind of what they've been waiting for. So to put a coat on them is kind of ridiculous."</p><p>Besides, some dogs already have plenty of padding. Like Ray Ramsey's pug.</p><p>"Any time it's like 10 below freezing, we put him in a sweater. Otherwise, because he's so heavy, he doesn't need it," said Ramsey, who lives in New York City.</p><p>If you play doggie dress-up, you're not alone. Last year, <a href="http://BarleysList.org">pet clothing</a> was a $300 million industry. It's a trend fueled for years by Hollywood movies such as "Legally Blonde" and "Beverly Hills Chihuahua," and pet-loving socialites like Paris Hilton.</p><p>And when the temperature dips, dog owners will do anything to keep their pets warm and fashionable. Peanut and Jelly, for example, wear coats that cost owner Eric Amel between $80 to $100.</p><p>It's money you don't have to spend, according to Dr. Cooper, unless your dog has really short hair, or a case of the shivers. Of course that's easy for him to say. Turns out, his dog wears a coat, too. What breed, color, age, height, and sex you choose isn't that important. It is the <a href="http://barleyslist.org/">horse's attitude</a>, training level, and experience that counts.<br /> Age doesn't make too much of a difference, but a young horse is not a good choice, because young horses don't have the ability to care for beginners that old, experienced horses do. Anywhere between 10-18 years old is probably what you will want.<br /> Mares and geldings are both good choices, but just because you buy a one doesn't guarantee that it</span><span style="font-family: arial; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);font-family:Arial, sans-serif;font-size:100%;" > will be gentle. Mares and geldings can be meaner or wilder than stallions, it just depends on the horse. <br /> The height of the horse won't affect its attitude (well, maybe it does.......<a href="http://barleyslist.org/">ponies</a> make up their height in attitude!), but it might effect the way you feel. If you are short, or if children will be riding the horse, you might want it to be a small one. I don't think that most beginners will want to go out and buy a 17 hand horse!<br /> Color, of course, won't affect your <a href="http://barleyslist.org/">horse</a> in any way.<br /> The horse's background is very important. You want a horse that has been ridden alot by alot of different people, and one that behaves well no matter what gets on its back. Old riding lesson horses, children's horses, 4-h horses, etc. are good choices. The horse you buy should be able to do what you want it to do, which is, in the beginner's case, be a calm dependable mount. </span><span style="font-family: arial; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);font-family:Arial, sans-serif;font-size:100%;" > </span><p face="arial" style=" color: rgb(0, 0, 0);"><span style="font-size:100%;"> The <a href="http://barleyslist.org/">horse's attitude</a> is everything. If it acts sluggish, mean, or wild, you won't want it. You want a horse with a pleasing, happy attitude. One that is gentle and patient, but not stubborn or lazy. Slugg</span><span style="font-size:100%;">ishness or anger may be signs that the horse is sick or lame. The horse shouldn't be overly jumpy or hyper, and it should like you. Sometimes, rarely, there will be a horse and a rider that just don't get along. They may both seem to fit each other, but they have 'personality clashes'. They just don't 'click'. If you feel the horse is unsure of you or unwilling to go for you, don't buy it. </span> </p><p style="font-family: arial; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);"> </p><h3 face="arial" style=" color: rgb(0, 0, 0);"><span style="font-size:100%;"> <a href="http://barleyslist.org/">The Children's Horse </a></span></h3><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);font-size:100%;" ><span style="font-family:arial;"> </span></span><span style="font-family: arial; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);font-family:Arial, sans-serif;font-size:100%;" > If you are buying a horse for your child, it should follow the same guidelines as the beginner's horse, but it needs to be even safer. You should get a horse that has been ridden by children before, and has lots of patience. You will probably need to get a small horse or pony. I don't know why, but ponies have some sort of attitude. Not all do, but alot of ponies sort of act really tough and nasty. Most aren't well trained, because no one ever trained them, they just threw some kids on their backs. Why? There aren't alot of people small enough to ride ponies, except children. Some ponies are wonderful, they will care for kids and give them years of fun. Other ponies will take advantage of a kids, and most know every trick there is for unseating their rider. </span><span style="font-family: arial; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);font-family:Arial, sans-serif;font-size:100%;" > <p> Horse can be the same way- one horse will be extra careful with the little child on its back, the next will take advantage of it and run for the barn. </p><p> Make sure to get a horse that is very well trained, and that will take very good care of your child. And, make sure you teach your child to be safe around horses, and to always wear a helmet. </p><h3> Th<span><span style="font-family: arial; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);font-family:Arial, sans-serif;font-size:100%;" ><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vx-dDpQNSCM/Tqb0_wXfIMI/AAAAAAAAAJw/Mk5Z2KFsJ4c/s1600/images.jpg"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 242px; height: 208px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vx-dDpQNSCM/Tqb0_wXfIMI/AAAAAAAAAJw/Mk5Z2KFsJ4c/s320/images.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5667486557244694722" border="0" /></a></span></span>e <a href="http://barleyslist.org/">Trail/Recreation Rider</a> </h3> If you <a href="http://barleyslist.org/">buy a horse</a> just for riding around and having fun on, it </span><span style="font-family: arial; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);font-family:Arial, sans-serif;font-size:100%;" >should be well trained and road safe. Get a horse that is used to trails, hills, traffic, and wilderness. You don't want a young horse that will always be shying and spoiling your rides. You will need a horse that is used to trail riding, and one that is used to the outdoors. A stall kept horse will not make a good trail horse, since it would be afraid of any ground that isn't perfectly flat, and shadows, wind, wild animals, etc. Make sure your horse rides well with other horses if you are going to go trail riding with friends. A horse that is always trying to kill the other horses isn't that fun to ride, as you spend all your time keeping your horse from misbehaving, and not enjoying the ride. <h3> <a href="http://barleyslist.org/">The Show Horse</a> </h3> If you are really into showing and competing, you probably don't need to read this, as you are probably well knowledgeable in this area of horsemanship. If you are looking for your first horse, and you would like to do a little showing, then you need to find a horse that can show. If you haven't ever showed before, a 4-h horse or open horse might be good. You will probably need a horse that is well experienced with showing, and that is well trained. You need a horse that can teach you, and one that is so used to its job, that even if you don't do everything perfect, the horse will. If you are focused on a particular event, then find a horse that is well trained for that event. Before you buy the horse, it is a good idea to see it compete, and maybe even show it yourself a little, to see if you like it. </span> <p style="font-family: arial; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);"> </p><h3 style="font-family: arial; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);"><span style="font-size:100%;"> The horse you buy should be well used to doing what you are going to have it do. Get one that has a good, willing attitude, and good training. </span></h3><p style="font-family: arial; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);"><span style="font-size:100%;"><a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/"><strong>Pet Friendly Businesses</strong></a>- To edit and/or update your information follow the link to that page: <a href="http://www.barleyslist.org/" target="_blank">http://www.barleyslist.org/</a> and Select Add/ Edit your business. </span></p><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);font-size:100%;" ><span style="font-family:arial;">If you're looking for </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">pet supplies</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://barleyslist.org/">pet stores</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">pet friendly hotels</a><span style="font-family:arial;"> or </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">dog friendly restaurants</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">specialty veterinarians</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">animal rescue</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">pet adoption</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">pet sitters</a><span style="font-family:arial;"> and </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">pet sitting</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">pet services</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">pet friendly services</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">dog parks</a><span style="font-family:arial;"> and </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">cat friendly bed and breakfast inns</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, etc- for all types of </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">pets,</a><span style="font-family:arial;"> </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">birds</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">fish</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">dogs</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">cats</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">horses</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">reptiles</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">rabbits</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">sheep</a><span style="font-family:arial;"> and </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">goat</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">farm animals</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">small pets</a><span style="font-family:arial;"> and </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.barleyslist.org/">pocket pets</a><span style="font-family:arial;">, etc- visit our site.
